It is hard to imagine a more outgoing, spirited 12 year old girl than Hayley. Most 12 year old girls are ready to retreat into their adolescent world and mingle with other adolescents who share their pre-teen angst, but not Hayley. Hayley counts many adults from other states as some of her best friends, and can’t wait to see them each time she makes a trip to PA. Some of her greatest friendships have been formed over the course of her 17 surgeries and subsequent recoveries. Hayley has severe scoliosis and kyphosis making walking, and just everyday tasks painful and difficult. When Hayley found out she was going to receive a room makeover from a team of local designers, she began watching HGTV to gather her ideas. When we first arrived to interview Hayley, she had paint chips taped to the wall to determine the perfect shades of color for her new room!
The design team was happy to incorporate Hayley’s ideas to create a very “cool” space where Hayley can express herself. A desk with special lighting encourages Hayley’s drawing and writing talents and shadow boxes throughout the room display trading pins Hayley collects and trades with other young patients at the hospital. A new memory foam mattress will allow Hayley to recover from future surgeries with the proper support she needs for her body and new flooring, installed by the parent of another April’s Angels room recipient replaced the 20 year old carpet in the room. Hayley’s new room encourages her expression and talents, provides her a better place to heal and recover from her surgeries and is “the coolest room I’ve ever seen” according to Hayley!
