April’s Angels encourages volunteer teams from churches, corporations or other organizations to use their talents to make fantasy rooms for deserving children. A volunteer team of design students from Meredith College stepped up to create a fantasy space for 13 year old Dwayne. Dwayne has a number of challenges to face including developmental delays, seizures and cognitive impairment, but Dwayne loves rescue vehicles including fire trucks. After muralist Jeanine Romeo created a firehouse and firetruck scene in Dwayne’s room, the Meredith volunteer team invited the Benson fire department to Dwyane’s room reveal so Dwayne could sit in actual truck to celebrate his new room! In addition to the fantasy elements that excited Dwayne in his new room, he also recieved a new large bed with storage underneath to help keep his room neat, clutter free and safe should a seizure strike. A rolling chair helps Dwayne to maneuver around his room and the house without needing constant assistance from his family. This small space has been made more functional and clearly more exciting and welcoming to Dwayne. |
